In this respect, Asset allocation or appropriate diversification is "the only free lunch you will find in the investment game." The biggest job you have as an investor is to manage your risk.

No doubt you’ve heard there’s no reward without risk. That’s as true of investing as it is of anything in life. Successful investing begins by conceding that – to a degree – uncertainty will always be your partner. You can guess what the market is going to do and you can either be right or wrong. Or you let some self-styled "expert" do the guessing for you. But no one guesses right consistently.

Back in the 1700s, a cry rose up – "Don’t put all your eggs in one basket!" That was for a severe shortage of eggs after a series of unfortunate events. It made a lot of sense, but raised a question – "Which sets of eggs in which baskets?" Almost four centuries later this is advice is still good: "Don’t put all your eggs in one basket!" Here, these eggs are our own funds. Hence, that would translate to "Don’t invest all your funds in one place!"

Most individual investors are usually obsessed with finding the "superstar" stock pick. They completely ignore the balancing needed to generate long term "wealth". Anyone can pick a winning horse once in a while and make some money. But can you do that every day? Probably not, and that’s most people lose money at gambling.

"Oh that means, diversify! I already do that." Well, diversify doesn’t mean 3 different tech stocks. That’s not what Asset Allocation is all about.

Imagine being at a street vendor. He sells sun glasses and umbrellas and some other items that are completely unrelated to each other. But he knows...

Want a piece of Barack Obama? Start bidding, Mumbai Mirror - Cover Story

After Singapore, US President’s autographed painting reaches the city as part of a global bid

After getting a bid of US $5.5 million in Singapore, a signed painting of Barack Obama - the only one of its kind in the world - has now reached Mumbai in the hope that someone in the city can do better.

The painting - oil, pen and pencil on board - by renowned African-American artist Gilbert Young, is circling the globe as part of a rare international bidding process. Young, 69, who is celebrating 50 years as an artist, presented the painting - titled History + Hope = Change - to Obama in July, 2008, at the Annual Convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Obama was already familiar with the paintings of Gilbert, who is famous for his 1970 work He ain't heavy, which sold over one million prints. Obama told Young while signing the painting: "Now that I've signed it, go make some money."

The painting has been brought to Mumbai by DeConseil, a Singapore based investment advisory firm. It will be up for bidding in a leading five-star hotel in the city in April.

According to Gaurav Shah, the managing director of DeConseil, a number of Indian collectors have already shown interest in buying the painting. "We will also take the profile of the bidder into consideration, it's not only about the price," Shah told Mumbai Mirror.

We are bullish about the Indian Industry, 4Ps Business & Marketing - Exclusive Interview

“WE ARE BULLISH ABOUT THE INDIAN INDUSTRY”

Rural India will soon become a focal point for development, says Gaurav Shah, Group Managing Director & CEO of the Singapore based DeGroup of Companies in an exclusive interaction with 4Ps B&M

Considering that DeGroup is a two-year-old firm, where do you position it in the global investment banking arena globally?

We are an investment banking advisory firm that provides companies with access to the two most critical resources for business – people and finance. We look at ourselves to provide critical value additions in terms of business intelligence, people connections, et al, on each project that we undertake. We strongly believe in the fact that it is never crowded along the extra mile. We differentiate ourselves by the most fundamental expressions of our client-first attitude.

Overseas firms that were attracted by India’s economic growth have found it tough to raise funds over the last 18 months. Many of them have already shuttered India operations in the past year, and more may be on their way out. How do you view the situation?

Yes, many firms have withdrawn from the Indian markets in the past one year or so. There could be several reasons. If the parent companies are bleeding on their home turf...

Hail to the Chief, Outlook Lounge, India

This exclusively autographed paintingof the US President Barack Obama by artist Gilbert Young is yours if you have plenty of spare change. Get it from www.de-conseil.com for anywhere between US$ 7-10 million ...

This is for you, Mr. Obama - The Daily Pioneer, India

When renowned artist Gilbert Young painted a portrait of the US President Barak Obama depicting him as a symbol of hope that people expect will bring in a change, he didn’t know that he would create history for himself. As he presented the painting to Obama at the Annual NAACP Convention in Ohio, Obama had an instant liking to it and remarked “You have made me look good.”

“This is what makes it (the painting) invaluable. Such an endorsement is indeed an unprecedented honour,” said Young in an email interview. Recalling his maiden interaction with the US President, he said, “When I handed my card to him he said he knew my work and told the crowd that I was a legend. It was the greatest honour of my life.”

About his style, this painter said, “I attempt to treat each work as a personal and intimate involvement with the subject. This allows it to develop its own distinctive character as I form my own interpretation. I restrict my use of colour & often leave the backgrounds white and uncluttered to show that emotions and feelings of mankind are timeless and universal.” About the portrait, he said, “It conveys the hope that Obama has given the world for the much needed change to take humanism to new heights. The work is a mixed media with oil, pen and pencil.”

... ...

It is a memory-based art work and not based on any photograph. “I had envisioned him in my art from a very long time. But, for the actual creation of the portrait there was discomfort with the short time line. The opportunity to meet President Obama overshadowed all my reluctance and I created what my wife calls an incredible portrait of Obama.” The portrait is now up for auction and the Indian owned Singapore investment banking advisors, DeConseil Pte Ltd are facilitating it.

OBAMA seeks Indian ART MART, DNA After HRS, Sunday

This one was a dream come true for American artist Gilbert Young, when he presented a double portrait of president Barack Obama at the Annual NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People) convention in Ohio. And the president liked it so much that he specially signed the portrait.

Says Young, “The President liked my portrait and said ‘You have made me look good’. And when I handed my card to president Obama, he said he knew my work and it was all worth it. He told the crowd that I was a legend. I felt I’d received the greatest honour of my artistic life.”

Young is looking at Indian collectors and the Indian art market to sell this work of his. He has also hired an Indian-owned Singapore-based investment company. Young confirms, “India is one of the most progressive countries in the world today and I think there are many real art lovers in the country.”

He adds, “Also, I personally like Indian art — it is culturally driven and extremely rich in heritage. One of my favourite Indian artists is Amrita Shergill and it’s unfortunate that she died young.” Ask him why he wants to sell this painting? “I feel it is important to give back to the communities, organisations and all the support forces that have been with me until here,” he explains.

Young was asked to create the portrait to present to him at the convention. “Through this portrait I am trying to portray the hope that president Obama has given the world.”
